Absolutely not. Every piece of Quail Lane Press artwork is 100% hand-drawn by the artist using drawing pens, ink, and paper — and then hand-printed on a vintage letterpress in our Milwaukie, Oregon studio. No AI tools are used anywhere in our creative process: not for generating images, not for assisting with design, not for layout, not for anything. The artist sits down with reference maps and topographic data and draws each line by hand. That drawing is then physically pressed into cotton paper on a mechanical press built decades before AI existed. What paper and ink do you use for letterpress printing?

We print on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, typically 220–300gsm. Cotton paper — also known as cotton rag paper, lettra, or cotton fiber paper — is the gold standard for letterpress printing. Unlike wood-pulp paper (which is what most books, magazines, and office paper are made from), cotton paper is made from cotton linters, the short fibers left on cotton seeds after ginning. This gives the paper several important properties: it is naturally acid-free, so it will not yellow or become brittle over time; it has a soft, pillowy surface that accepts the deep impression of a letterpress beautifully; and it is extremely durable — museum conservators consider cotton rag paper archival-quality because it can last for centuries without degradation. How do I frame a letterpress print?

Embracing the Grey

So I'm not gonna lie, my first winter in the Pacific Northwest was a little rough. I had a kinda hard time dealing with the joy sucking (as I liked to call them) clouds. But, I must say I feel like something has shifted a little in me now. I think I might be starting to like the grey. Don't want to speak to soon...the cloudy, rainy weather has only just begun. But, I feel like the weather is really conducive to making art and I must say that if you don't mind getting a little wet, the lush, fern laden forests are spectacular this time of year. I went to Larch Mountain this morning. It's about 45 mins outside of the city and it was just incredible. Small brooks everywhere with ferns and mushrooms galore all under towering conifers.
