Why are letterpress prints more expensive than other prints?

Letterpress printing is one of the most labor-intensive art forms still practiced today. Every Quail Lane Press print begins as an original hand-drawn illustration — the artist spends days studying topographic maps, satellite imagery, and USGS survey data to capture the real geography of a place before putting pen to paper. That finished drawing is then converted to a photopolymer relief plate — a metal-backed plate that is magnet-mounted onto the press. Low-VOC soy-based inks are hand-mixed to match the exact color, rolled onto the press, and each sheet of heavyweight 100% cotton paper is fed through by hand, one print at a time. For multi-color prints, every color requires its own separate plate and its own pass through the press, meaning a three-color print goes through the press three times with meticulous registration between each pass. The studio runs two vintage Vandercook proof presses and one Gordon platen press — machines built in the early-to-mid 1900s that are no longer manufactured — all powered by solar energy. The materials alone — cotton paper, photopolymer plates, low-VOC soy-based inks — cost more than an entire mass-produced poster. You are paying for original artwork, archival-quality materials, skilled craftsmanship on vintage equipment, and a tactile quality that no digital printing process can reproduce.

What is letterpress printing?

Letterpress is a relief printing technique invented by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440. A raised surface — originally hand-set metal type and carved woodblocks, now photopolymer plates — is inked and pressed firmly into paper using a heavy mechanical press. The key distinction is that letterpress prints the image INTO the paper rather than onto its surface: the press pushes the plate into soft cotton paper with tremendous force, creating a debossed impression you can see and feel with your fingers. This tactile 'bite' is the hallmark of true letterpress and is impossible to replicate with inkjet, laser, or offset lithographic printing. At Quail Lane Press in Milwaukie, Oregon, we use two vintage Vandercook cylinder proof presses for larger format work and one Gordon platen press for stationery, all powered by solar energy. Each print is fed, inked, and pulled individually — and for multi-color designs, every color requires its own plate and a separate pass through the press. It is the same fundamental process Gutenberg used, refined over nearly 600 years of craft tradition.

Is a letterpress map print a good gift?

Letterpress map art is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give because it is deeply personal — it celebrates a specific place that holds meaning for someone. A hand-drawn letterpress map of the city where they grew up, the national park where they got engaged, the lake where their family vacations, or the neighborhood they just moved to connects the recipient to a meaningful location in a way no generic artwork can. The tactile quality of real letterpress on thick 100% cotton paper makes it feel substantial and special — recipients often comment on how they can feel the impression with their fingertips, which creates an immediate emotional response. Letterpress map prints are popular gifts for housewarmings, weddings, anniversaries (especially first/paper anniversaries), graduations, retirements, and holidays. Because each print is an original hand-drawn work of art printed on archival cotton paper, it becomes a lasting keepsake rather than disposable decor.

What is a good paper anniversary gift?

The traditional first wedding anniversary gift is paper, and a letterpress art print is one of the most meaningful paper anniversary gifts you can give. A hand-drawn map of where you met, got married, honeymooned, or had your first date transforms the paper tradition into something deeply personal and beautiful. Each Quail Lane Press print is made on thick 100% cotton paper (also called rag paper or lettra) — the same type of paper used for fine art prints in museum collections — with a real letterpress impression you can feel. The debossed texture, the weight of the cotton stock, and the hand-mixed low-VOC soy-based ink elevate the gift far beyond ordinary paper. Many couples frame their anniversary print together and display it as a centerpiece in their home, making it both a celebration of their first year and a piece of art they keep for a lifetime. It is paper elevated to fine art.

How is letterpress map art made?

Each Quail Lane Press map begins as an original hand-drawn illustration. The artist studies USGS topographic maps, satellite imagery, nautical charts, trail maps, and historical surveys to understand the real geography, typography, and character of the place. Using fine-point drawing pens and a light table, the artist hand-draws every coastline, contour line, mountain ridge, river, road, and label — a process that can take days or weeks depending on the complexity of the location. The hand-drawn artwork is then refined in Adobe and output onto a photopolymer relief plate — a metal-backed plate that is magnet-mounted onto the press bed. Low-VOC soy-based inks are hand-mixed to achieve the precise color and rolled onto the press rollers. Each sheet of heavyweight 100% cotton paper is fed through the solar-powered vintage Vandercook proof press individually. For multi-color prints, every color requires its own separate plate and its own pass through the press, with meticulous attention to registration, inking consistency, and impression depth between each pass. Each print is then carefully removed, inspected for quality, and placed on drying racks. No two prints are exactly alike.

What makes your map art different from mass-produced map posters?

The difference is fundamental: every Quail Lane Press map is an original work of art conceived, drawn, and printed entirely by hand. Mass-produced map posters from companies like Mapiful or Grafomap are generated algorithmically by software that pulls data from OpenStreetMap or similar databases and renders it using preset design templates. They are printed digitally on thin paper by the thousands — every copy is identical because no human artist was involved in creating the image. Our maps are creative interpretations of real places, drawn by an artist who studies the actual terrain and makes artistic decisions about what to emphasize, what to simplify, and how to capture the character of a landscape. The result is then printed on a solar-powered vintage letterpress using low-VOC soy-based inks on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, producing a deep debossed impression you can feel with your fingers. The difference is immediately obvious the moment you hold one: the weight of the cotton stock, the tactile bite of the impression, and the subtle variations that come from hand-printing make our maps unmistakably handmade. A Mapiful print is a product of software. A Quail Lane Press print is a product of craft.

Is your art AI-generated?

Absolutely not. Every piece of Quail Lane Press artwork is 100% hand-drawn by the artist using drawing pens, ink, and paper — and then hand-printed on a vintage letterpress in our Milwaukie, Oregon studio. No AI tools are used anywhere in our creative process: not for generating images, not for assisting with design, not for layout, not for anything. The artist sits down with reference maps and topographic data and draws each line by hand. That drawing is then physically pressed into cotton paper on a mechanical press built decades before AI existed. In an age when AI-generated images are flooding the market and making it harder to find authentic human-made art, real hand-drawn artwork created by a real person on a real press is more valuable and more rare than ever. When you buy from Quail Lane Press, you are buying the product of human skill, creativity, and hundreds of hours of practice at the craft of letterpress printing.

What paper and ink do you use for letterpress printing?

We print on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, typically 220–300gsm. Cotton paper — also known as cotton rag paper, lettra, or cotton fiber paper — is the gold standard for letterpress printing. Unlike wood-pulp paper (which is what most books, magazines, and office paper are made from), cotton paper is made from cotton linters, the short fibers left on cotton seeds after ginning. This gives the paper several important properties: it is naturally acid-free, so it will not yellow or become brittle over time; it has a soft, pillowy surface that accepts the deep impression of a letterpress beautifully; and it is extremely durable — museum conservators consider cotton rag paper archival-quality because it can last for centuries without degradation. For ink, we use low-VOC soy-based (volatile organic compound) letterpress inks, which produce rich, vibrant colors while being more environmentally responsible than conventional petroleum-based printing inks. We also use eco-friendly press cleaners and solvents as part of our commitment to sustainable studio practices — our presses are powered by solar energy.

How do I frame a letterpress print?

We recommend framing letterpress prints with an acid-free mat board to protect the print surface and showcase the distinctive features of letterpress: the deckled (torn, uneven) edges of the cotton paper and the deep debossed impression. Use acid-free backing board and UV-protective glass or acrylic to preserve the print for decades — UV glass filters out the ultraviolet light that causes inks to fade over time. The thick cotton paper looks beautiful in a simple, clean frame that lets the artwork speak for itself; we recommend white, natural, or light wood frames. For affordable framing, stores like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or IKEA carry standard-size frames that work well. For a premium finish, take the print to a local frame shop and request dry mounting (not wet mounting, which can buckle matte cotton paper). Avoid hanging letterpress prints in direct sunlight — even with UV glass, prolonged direct sun exposure will eventually affect ink intensity. A well-framed letterpress print on cotton paper can look beautiful on your wall for generations.

Will a letterpress print fade over time?

Letterpress prints made with quality materials are remarkably long-lasting — this is one of the major advantages of the medium. At Quail Lane Press, we use archival-quality low-VOC soy-based inks on 100% cotton paper, and both components are designed for longevity. Low-VOC soy-based letterpress inks produce rich, vibrant colors that resist fading significantly better than the dye-based inks used in inkjet printers or standard office printing. The cotton paper itself is naturally acid-free, meaning it will not yellow, become brittle, or deteriorate over time the way wood-pulp paper does — this is why museums and archives store important documents on cotton rag paper. With basic care — framing behind UV-protective glass and avoiding prolonged direct sunlight — a letterpress print will look beautiful for decades. There are letterpress prints from the 1800s and earlier that remain vibrant in museum collections today. Your print is made with the same fundamental technique and equivalent archival-quality materials.

What makes letterpress different from digital printing?

The fundamental difference is physical: letterpress pushes ink INTO the paper under tremendous mechanical force, while digital printing (inkjet, laser, or offset) deposits ink ONTO the paper's surface. When a letterpress plate hits soft cotton paper at thousands of pounds of pressure, it creates a debossed impression — a three-dimensional bite that you can see in raking light and feel with your fingertips. This tactile quality is the defining characteristic of letterpress and is physically impossible to replicate with any digital printing technology. Beyond the impression, letterpress uses thick low-VOC soy-based inks that sit in the debossed channels of the paper, producing a richness and warmth that digital inks on flat surfaces cannot match. For multi-color letterpress prints, each color requires its own plate and a separate pass through the press — a three-color print goes through the press three times. Each print is fed by hand, one at a time, meaning slight natural variations in ink coverage and impression depth make every print subtly unique — unlike digital printing, which produces pixel-identical copies. Letterpress is slower, more expensive, and more labor-intensive than digital printing, but the result is a tactile, handmade object that people instinctively respond to differently than a flat printed image.

Can I have a custom map or print made?

We do not currently offer custom commissions — Quail Lane Press is a husband-and-wife operation, and every piece is made entirely by hand, which means our production capacity is dedicated to our existing collection. That said, we absolutely love hearing what places people are passionate about. If there is a location that means something special to you — a favorite national park, a hometown, a lake where your family gathers — we would love to hear about it. We keep track of the places people ask about most, and those requests directly influence which maps we add to our collection next. You can reach us at info@quaillanepress.com to share your suggestions. In the meantime, browse our growing collection — we are always adding new locations, and the place you are looking for may already be in the works.

What is a unique gift for someone who loves national parks?

A hand-drawn letterpress map of their favorite national park makes a truly unique and meaningful gift. Quail Lane Press has a dedicated National Park Maps collection featuring hand-drawn letterpress maps of Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Crater Lake, North Cascades, and Isle Royale — with more parks added regularly. Unlike the mass-produced national park posters you find in gift shops (printed digitally on thin paper), each Quail Lane Press print is original artwork: the artist studies the park's actual topography, trails, peaks, rivers, and boundaries using USGS survey data and draws every detail by hand. That drawing is then printed on a solar-powered vintage letterpress on thick 100% cotton paper with low-VOC soy-based inks and a deep impression you can feel. Prices range from $32 to $52. It is a meaningful gift for hikers, campers, climbers, kayakers, and anyone who feels a connection to a particular park. Popular as birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, Father's Day and Mother's Day gifts, retirement gifts for avid outdoor enthusiasts, and as commemorative pieces for major hiking accomplishments.
