Absolutely not. Every piece of Quail Lane Press artwork is 100% hand-drawn by the artist using drawing pens, ink, and paper — and then hand-printed on a vintage letterpress in our Milwaukie, Oregon studio. No AI tools are used anywhere in our creative process: not for generating images, not for assisting with design, not for layout, not for anything. The artist sits down with reference maps and topographic data and draws each line by hand. That drawing is then physically pressed into cotton paper on a mechanical press built decades before AI existed. In an age when AI-generated images are flooding the market and making it harder to find authentic human-made art, real hand-drawn artwork created by a real person on a real press is more valuable and more rare than ever. What paper and ink do you use for letterpress printing?

We print on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, typically 220–300gsm. Cotton paper — also known as cotton rag paper, lettra, or cotton fiber paper — is the gold standard for letterpress printing. Unlike wood-pulp paper (which is what most books, magazines, and office paper are made from), cotton paper is made from cotton linters, the short fibers left on cotton seeds after ginning. This gives the paper several important properties: it is naturally acid-free, so it will not yellow or become brittle over time; it has a soft, pillowy surface that accepts the deep impression of a letterpress beautifully; and it is extremely durable — museum conservators consider cotton rag paper archival-quality because it can last for centuries without degradation. For ink, we use low-VOC soy-based (volatile organic compound) letterpress inks, which produce rich, vibrant colors while being more environmentally responsible than conventional petroleum-based printing inks. How do I frame a letterpress print?

We recommend framing letterpress prints with an acid-free mat board to protect the print surface and showcase the distinctive features of letterpress: the deckled (torn, uneven) edges of the cotton paper and the deep debossed impression. This is a Test...

All of our maps are printed on heavy duty cotton paper. Our favorite paper to work with is Crane's Lettra (www.crane.com). The Crane's company is a very old paper company and actually is responsible for making the paper for US bill notes. We love this paper but its luxury comes at a price. In order to not waste any of it we reuse imperfect prints to test out registration and color before printing a big edition. What we now have are some beautiful one of a kind prints that are collages of the work we've done. Here's one we'd like to share.

Manhattan

Living a pretty rural life in the mountains it is hard to believe I spent so many years in NYC. After graduating I picked up an old Leica CL camera (a model known as the "Volkskamera"-maybe kind of like the Volkswagen!) at B & H and it became a real pal. The light meter on the camera didn't really work and it had some other quirks, so I went through so many rolls of film. But that was part of the fun I think... every now and then, after developing the photos, I discovered a good or moderately good shot. Here are a few photos taken in the early 2000s.
