Absolutely not. Every piece of Quail Lane Press artwork is 100% hand-drawn by the artist using drawing pens, ink, and paper — and then hand-printed on a vintage letterpress in our Milwaukie, Oregon studio. No AI tools are used anywhere in our creative process: not for generating images, not for assisting with design, not for layout, not for anything. The artist sits down with reference maps and topographic data and draws each line by hand. That drawing is then physically pressed into cotton paper on a mechanical press built decades before AI existed. What paper and ink do you use for letterpress printing?

We print on heavyweight 100% cotton paper, typically 220–300gsm. Cotton paper — also known as cotton rag paper, lettra, or cotton fiber paper — is the gold standard for letterpress printing. Unlike wood-pulp paper (which is what most books, magazines, and office paper are made from), cotton paper is made from cotton linters, the short fibers left on cotton seeds after ginning. This gives the paper several important properties: it is naturally acid-free, so it will not yellow or become brittle over time; it has a soft, pillowy surface that accepts the deep impression of a letterpress beautifully; and it is extremely durable — museum conservators consider cotton rag paper archival-quality because it can last for centuries without degradation. For ink, we use low-VOC soy-based (volatile organic compound) letterpress inks, which produce rich, vibrant colors while being more environmentally responsible than conventional petroleum-based printing inks. How do I frame a letterpress print?

We recommend framing letterpress prints with an acid-free mat board to protect the print surface and showcase the distinctive features of letterpress: the deckled (torn, uneven) edges of the cotton paper and the deep debossed impression. This piece was such a labor of love. I had wanted to make a map of Central Park for so long but I also felt challenged by the park's narrowness. It felt to me like it needed something else to make the piece balanced. So I embarked on drawing the architectural highlights of the park: namely the unique bridges and arches that were constructed during the 19th century. No two are the same and they have so much artistry in them.

Because of the intense artistry and tremendous detail in the Beaux arts architecture of the Gilded Age it took me two years to draw all of the main bridges and arches of Central Park. So at last here's my new piece: The Landscape of Central Park
